Death of N.C. Pioneer

CASINO, Sunday. — 

A North Coast pioneer whose first glimpse of the area was from a cyclone tossed vessel off the Ballina coast in 1877, died here recently.

She was Mrs. Ann Schneider, aged 93.

As a teenager, she came to the Northern Rivers with her family by coastal boat.

Gale lashed seas forced the ship to heave to off Ballina during a night of fury.

Next day the vessel limped into sanctuary at Ballina through a pathway of wrecked boats.

This introduction to the North Coast heralded an active life here in which Mrs. Schneider saw the area develop from sparsely settled virgin forest to the prosperous region of today.

Born at Dungog on October 16, 1860, Mrs. Schneider was the eldest of 12 children of the late Mr. and Mrs. Angus Mc Donald.

Her mother's maiden name was Mary Lulham. She married the late John Schneider at Tomki Station in 1882. Her husband was a farmer in the Gundurimba district.

Later they ran the Irvington Hotel, when the boats that plied their trade along the Richmond River made Irvington a stopping place. After running a property at Dyraaba for some time, Mr & Mrs. Schneider settled at Casino.

The late Mr. Schneider died about six years ago.

There were five children of the marriage: Frank (Ettrick), John and Alf (both deceased), Mary (Mrs. Alf. Smith, Coraki) and Agnes (Mrs. M.  O'Neil, South Gundurimba).

There were 34 grandchildren, 62 great grandchildren and two great-great grandchildren.

Surviving sisters of the late Mrs. Schneider are: Agnes (Mrs. G. Rummery, Lismore), Nell (Mrs. J. Mulherin, Casino), Catherine (Mrs. W. Connolly, Dobie's Bight).

Trevor D. Bevan had charge of the funeral arrangements.
